In this talk I will report on recent joint work with Echterhoff and Willett where we develop new ideas to construct and study certain exact crossed products by locally compact groups. The special focus is on the minimal exact crossed product functor that is used in the new formulation of the Baum-Connes conjecture. In particular we show that the group C*-algebra associated with this functor is always the reduced group C*-algebra, proving that the new conjecture agrees with the ordinary one for trivial coefficients.
