Details:
In Iwasawa theory one studies the asymptotic growth of arithmetic invariants in a chain of p-power field extensions (e.g., the class numbers of the intermediate number fields or the Tate-Shafarevich groups of algebraic varieties defined over these number fields). Surprisingly, many of these invariants grow in a very uniform manner; it is then of particular interest to determine the number of fields in the chain which are sufficient for revealing the exact growth pattern.
After a self-contained introduction to the subject, we will discuss several situations in which one can make explicit a sufficient number of fields.
