Starting from the work of Taylor and Stein, inhomogeneous pseudodifferential calculi were developped to prove the hypoellipticity of a class of differential operators much bigger than the class of elliptic differential operators. In this talk I will recall the definition of elliptic differential opertors and the Atiyah Singer index formula. Then I will briefly explain the idea behind inhomogeneous pseudodifferential calculi and the new developments concerning the index problem.
