Details:
Topological insulators are certain materials or metamaterials featuring a topological non-triviality in their mathematical description. This feature typically manifests as a non-trivial class in the K-theory of a suitable algebra of observables. We give an introduction to a coarse geometric approach to this topic that emerged quite recently, where so-called Roe algebras function as the underlying observable algebras. We explain several recent results in this direction, mostly joint with Guo Chuan Thiang.
