This talk will provide a teaser for Khovanov homology, a knot invariant constructed roughly 20 years ago as a categorification of the Jones polynomial. We will see how Khovanov homology, even though defined in a purely combinatorial manner (using diagrams), has geometric applications to knots and smooth 4-dimensional manifolds.
