While most mathematicians have heard of the Langlands program, it is not so easy to say precisely what
it encompasses. It has many aspects, and even Langlands himself admitted that he does not understand
all of it.
In this lecture I will try to introduce the Langlands program via three toy cases, starting from
scratch. The examples already show several key features and provide a glimpse of more
general instances. We aim at a modern view on the local Langlands correspondence, which involves
algebraic geometry and is it not restricted to irreducible representations.
