Large-scale geometry of group-like objects
11.5.2023, 16:15 - 17:15
Speaker:Dr. Diego Martinez, Universität Münster
Location:Mathematisches Institut, Bunsenstr 3-5SitzungszimmerGras Geo Map
Organizer:Mathematisches Institut
Details:
Classical differential geometry studies manifolds locally, as the smooth behavior only happens at small scales. Large-scale geometry, on the other hand, shifts the point of view, and studies geometric objects on a global scale. This point of view has been utterly fruitful in last few decades, in particular with respect to the study of operator algebras. In this talk we will discuss this paradigm of large-scale geometry and which characteristics it captures. We will then produce many examples of these kinds of objects from group-like combinatorial data. Time permitting, we will also discuss the ulterior motives why this point of view appears naturally in operator algebras.
