In the case of a particle, a magnetic field is a closed 2-form that give rise to projective representations of the symmetry group. For a string, the magnetic field is promoted to a closed 3-form that gives rise to a quasi Hopf algebra, whose coproduct is dictated by string interactions.
A similar structure also appears in a variant of the Kitaev model in condensed matter physics.
