MathematischeGesellschaft What is homology? Or, how to count the holes in a space |

Beschreibung:
Homology is one of the main tools of algebraic topology, and it usually gets described in one of two ways: "It counts the holes in a space", which sounds trivial, or "It's a family of functors from topological spaces to abelian groups", which tells you almost nothing about it ...
In this talk, I will try to explain what homology actually is, how to compute it, and why Klein's bottle has a little more than one hole, but definitely less than two. [No knowledge of topology required -- on the other hand, if any of you have been wondering what topologists are doing with their lives, this is your chance!]
