Beschreibung:
There is nothing quite like the rush that comes from seeing a familiar face. Exactly how our brains encode familiar faces –or how this process differs from the way we perceive unfamiliar faces– has remained elusive for decades. Using whole-brain functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), we found that personally familiar faces engage the macaque face-processing network more than unfamiliar faces. Familiar faces also recruited two previously unknown face areas at anatomically conserved locations within the perirhinal cortex and the temporal pole. These two areas responded to familiar faces emerging from a blur with a characteristic nonlinear surge, akin to the abruptness of familiar face recognition. Using fMRI to guide single-unit recordings, we measured the activity of single neurons from one of these novel face-selective regions, area TP in the temporal pole. A high fraction of neurons in face area TP were selective for familiar monkey faces, and pattern classification analyses demonstrated that information on the exemplar and category level (i.e. familiar versus unfamiliar faces) can be decoded from population activity. Importantly, neurons in the face-selective area AM, which is thought to compute facial identity in the core face-processing network, were not modulated by familiarity. Together, these results suggest that TP cells implement a critical stage in familiar face recognition, and may facilitate the transition from face perception into a machinery for individual recognition.
