Beschreibung:
Branching rules describe how the restriction of an irreducible representation of a group decomposes when restricted to a subgroup. For compact groups, irreducible representations are finite-dimensional and the corresponding branching rules can often be studied by algebraic and combinatorial methods. For non-compact groups, irreducible representations are typically infinite-dimensional, so the corresponding branching problems are of a more analytic nature.
In this talk I will focus on branching problems for unitary representations of real reductive Lie groups and explain how they are related to harmonic analysis and spectral theory of differential operators. Already the restriction of representations of SL(2,C) to SL(2,R) has some interesting features which I will explain in detail.
