Organizer:European Neuroscience Institute
Details:
This talk will motivate and briefly defend an ethical framework for animal research that Tom Beauchamp and I introduce in our book, Principles of Animal Research Ethics, before offering reflections on basic research and nonhuman primate subjects. After providing background to our framework, I will explain and argue for three principles of social benefit and three principles of animal welfare. Then I will indicate how this framework is more comprehensive than the canonical “3 Rs.” After next presenting a decision tree implied by the six principles, I will comment on the framework’s implications for basic research and for the use of NHPs.
