Homological stability is a stability phenomenon that occurs for certain families of spaces, such as configuration spaces or moduli spaces of manifolds, and certain families of groups, such as symmetric groups, general linear groups, or Higman-Thompson groups. I will give an idea of what these different objects have in common, and describe how stability has in many cases allowed breakthrough in computations.
